Webinar: Solutions to Effectively Manage SCN and SDS

Jason Bond, plant pathologist at Southern Illinois University, and Nick Tinsley, SeedGrowth™ technical representative at Bayer CropScience, discuss the basics of SCN and SDS management. They review where these pests thrive, symptoms of infestation and impact on yield, as well as conventional management practices and how new seed and seed treatments provide control. Key Takeaways: About SCN 80% of Illinois fields are infested; growers should assume they have it Once a field is infested, it’s always infested Resistant varieties are widely available, but most of the resistance is from a single source You can have no visible symptoms and [...]

Why You May Need Balance GT Beans

Why will the Balance™ GT Soybean Performance System be important to the soybean industry and weed management? There are current certainties in weed management. First, there are no new novel herbicide modes of action coming to market anytime soon for corn and soybeans. And second, weed control is getting harder every year due to weed resistance. The past couple of years there has been a lot of press on LibertyLink®, Roundup Ready® Xtend and Enlist™ beans and while these are new traits, the herbicide modes of action (glufosinate, 2,4-D and dicamba) have been around for decades and date back [...]

Soil Phosphorus Measurements

Most soil labs run an extractable phosphorus test and measure extractable P. There are a number of extractants but the most common today is the universal Mehlich-3, because it can be used to extract phosphate and the other bases together and then measure simultaneously either colorimetrically or with an ICP (Inductively coupled plasma) atomic emission spectroscopy. Most labs offer all extractant methods, but if you have a preference make sure you ask for it. Marestail control in Soybeans

Marestail is a problematic winter annual weed that is often resistant to glyphosate. But control isn’t as hard as you think and just takes a little planning. Marestail is a nuisance since it germinates in the fall, spring and early summer. Control is relatively easy even without glyphosate when application timing is right. And since it has such a wide germination window, it is important that control be well planned out in advance. The last thing you want to do is control marestail after it’s bolted since control is almost impossible. One of the more common practices is to [...]
