Spring Moth Trapping Update

Spring moth trapping is one month in and we thank all of the volunteer cooperators for diligently sending in trap counts each week.

The stormy weather pattern continues to bring north lots of black cutworm moths. Several counties have had significant moth flights. We expect more over the coming weeks.

While black cutworm flights have been steady these past few weeks, the same cannot be said for true armyworm. Trap catches have been low across the state.

To keep up to date with significant flights, maps to daily trap catches can be found at Insects – Corn ipmPIPE. Information is also shared on social media @ilpestsurvey on Facebook or “X”. Stay tuned for additional updates this spring.

Kelly is an entomologist at the University of Illinois where her role is the State Survey Coordinator of the Cooperative Agriculture Pest Survey (CAPS) program. She coordinate surveys for invasive insects, pathogens and weeds that are a threat to Illinois’ agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and the environment. She works work with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and USDA-APHIS-PPQ along with industry stakeholders, University of Illinois Extension, and many others. In addition to coordinating surveys and managing the data associated with them, she helps develop public information and educational material for these invasive pests.
