Spring Management Tips for Winter Wheat

Want to product high wheat yields? Intensive spring management is the key. Widespread heavy rains and an Easter blizzard across parts of Illinois haven’t made the last few weeks feel much like our traditional springs. But spring is here and there will be a lot to do as soon as field conditions allow. Despite our cool/cold wet weather, wheat fields have greened up and a lot of growth has occurred, with most of the crop in southern Illinois is at Feekes growth stage 4 – 5. Some early planted fields in the south are entering Feekes 6, where the [...]

Agronomy: Variety Selection for Double-Crop Soybeans

Sourcing quality seed—seed with the genetic potential to maximize production in a specific region, and adapted to modern management systems and other agronomic factors—is a very important consideration for all producers. While varietal considerations are usually high on the list of priorities for full-season crops, the importance of selecting soybean varieties for placement in double-crop situations does not always rank as highly on the seed selection radar. Reasons for this might result from a combination of factors such as a limited amount of double-crop acres the producer intends to plant in comparison to total soybean acres, limited variety testing [...]

Agronomy: Planning for Double-Crop Soybeans Starts Now

In spite of production-related challenges associated with the wheat/double-crop soybean system, favorable economics associated with two-crop rotation make it worthy of consideration for many operations. While budget information indicates the possibility of favorable returns, the overall competitiveness of the system hinges on maximizing returns from both crops, not just one of the two. It is interesting, however, that most of the information available to producers today is crop specific instead of a “systems approach” as with the double-crop rotation. To learn more about the possibility for improved profitability, University of Illinois 2016 budget projections are available on line at [...]
