PODCAST: Soybean Replant and Late Planting Considerations

CCA Soy Envoy, Ashley McEwen, joins the podcast this week to give an update on soybean planting and replanting from her area of Illinois. We also discuss considerations for those last few acres of beans to be planted. Listen to learn more. ILSoyAdvisor Podcasts · Soybean Replant and Late Planting Considerations

Soybean Agronomic Goal Setting, More Than A Resolution

Many make a resolution at the beginning of each year to somehow better themselves. Exercise more, eat less, stop smoking or make more time for friends and family, just to name a few. Most times those resolutions don’t last much through the first day, week or maybe month. There are many reasons why they don’t last, but one that seems to be said the most often is that there weren’t goals and benchmarks along the way. We all have goals in our production plans each year, yield goals mainly, but maybe also agronomic goals. Things like planting date, conditions, [...]

Uncover Hidden Nutrient Deficiencies with Tissue Testing

Are you able to look at a plant and know exactly which nutrients might be limiting yield this growing season? In some cases, a soybean plant may be deficient in a specific nutrient and exhibit visual symptoms characteristic of that nutrient deficiency. For example, it is not uncommon to observe chlorotic or yellow leaf margins when potassium is limiting a crop. In many situations, however, visual symptoms may not be present, but one or more nutrients may potentially be limiting the growth and yield of the crop. Tissue testing is an approach that can be used to uncover these [...]

Illinois Department of Agriculture Dicamba Guidance

On June 9 the Illinois Department of Agriculture issued specific guidelines for Illinois for the use of existing stock of dicamba. This follows a decision on June 3, 2020, in National Family Farm Coalition vs. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Case No. 19-70115, where the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued a ruling immediately vacating the registrations of Xtendimax®, FeXapan® and Engenia®, all of which contain the herbicide dicamba. On June 8, 2020, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final cancellation order for these three dicamba products. The final cancellation order can be found [...]

I Planted Beans Early, Now I’ll Set Yield Records, Right?

Many farmers in the state of Illinois planted this year’s soybean crop earlier than ever before.  Near-perfect soil conditions in early April, coupled with less than favorable memories of 2019, led to widespread planting across the state in the first half of the month. Widespread understanding of the potential yield benefits of planting early also encouraged growers who in some cases finished their soybean planting before even starting corn. Although there have been some field regions requiring replant, mainly because of this May’s late frost or saturated soils, most growers I have spoken with are happy with their decision [...]

Managing Resistant Weeds with Seed Destruction Technologies

This article was originally published on the Soybean Research & Information Network, a checkoff funded website. Controlling weeds like herbicide-resistant waterhemp and other pigweed species is a serious economic challenge for soybean farmers. Rather than wait until all herbicide options become unavailable, weed scientists are evaluating non-chemical control options now. “Postponing non-chemical weed control research until all available chemical control options have been exhausted would be a mistake and would leave producers with a lack of weed control options and even more serious herbicide-resistance issues than producers currently face,” says Kevin Bradley, University of Missouri Extension weed scientist. “That [...]
