ISA Names 2019 CCA Soybean Master Adviser

Kevin Nelson, Ottawa, Illinois, was honored as the 2019 CCA Soybean Master Adviser during the ILSoyAdvisor Soybean Summit, Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Springfield, Illinois. Succession Success

This article originally appeared in the January 2019 issue of Soy Perspectives a publication of the Illinois Soybean Association. Succession success — have those two words become an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp or small crowd? What stands between farmers and a smooth transition of ownership from parents to children? The list of possible answers is long, but experts often point to differing generational mindsets as one of the most significant obstacles to a successful plan. The Pew Research Center defines millennials as those born between 1981 and 1996. Since the oldest millennials are now well into their thirties, the time is [...]

Enlist E3 Soybeans Await Chinese Approval

This article was originally published July 24, 2018, in Successful Farming. The Enlist™ weed-control system that features tolerance to 2,4-D choline is a go for cotton. Ditto for corn. Soybeans? Well, all is a go for a widespread commercial U.S. launch except for a familiar sticking point that caused the system that includes tolerance to 2,4-D not to widely commercially debut in 2018. “We continue to seek import approval from China,” says Shawna Hubbard, product marketing manager with Corteva AgriScience™, agriculture division of DowDuPont. Once approved, it’s a go. In the meantime, Corteva AgriScience is concentrating on stewardship of [...]

Soy Power: The Protein of Choice

Look in the shopping cart or at the restaurant plate of today’s consumers. You’re likely to find more plant-based, protein-rich foods that promote health and make eating an experience. When consumers learn those foods fit their definition of sustainable production, even better. While this is a shift from the meat-and-potatoes generation, soy is still part of the food equation. In fact, today’s food trends may open new doors for soybeans, if farmers play their cards right. “Clean eating with all natural, recognizable ingredients and accountability of farmers is becoming more important. Soy is a star among the many available [...]

Protein, Oil and Amino Acids: Where Illinois Soybeans Ranked in 2017

By traditional protein and oil quality measures, the 2017 Illinois soybean crop performed well compared to the national average. Protein was slightly lower. Oil was slightly higher. And by a relatively new measure—the composite feed value based on seven essential amino acids critical to livestock customers—the 2017 Illinois crop also performed well compared with the national average. Bottom line: In addition to being the leading soybean state in the U.S. in terms of total production (611.9 million bushels) and average yield (58 bushels/acre), Illinois soybean farmers can be proud of producing soybeans with high end-user value based on important [...]

ISA Trade Teams Initiative

Not only is Illinois the leading soybean-producing state in America, it’s also the fourth largest soybean country in the entire world, producing nearly 600 million bushels of beans on more than 10 million acres in 2017. Roughly 60 percent of those beans, with an estimated value of nearly $3 billion dollars, are destined for export markets, with one out of every three rows going to our biggest soybean customer, China. In this episode of ILSoyAdvisor.com Profitability Radio, we speak with ISA Trade Teams Lead David Headley about ISA’s effort to build global demand for Illinois soybeans. Headley discusses ISA [...]
